Amreli:
Thousands of Maldharis (cattle rearers) will throng the Amreli District Development Officer’s (DDO) office along with their cattle on Monday to protest against the alleged continuous encroachment on grazing land by land sharks.
Members of Gau Gauchar Suraksha Samiti, Amreli, claimed that about 10,000 Maldharis will come along with three thousand animals from different talukas, including Lathi, Babra, Sabarkundla and Dari among others.
“About six months ago, the government had given us assurance in written that the encroachments will be removed. But not a single step in this regard has been taken,” said Magan Rabari of the Samiti, who is a lawyer by profession.
He said that due to encroachments by industrialists and realtors, the Maldharis in the region were finding it hard to survive.
District Collector D A Satya said, “We have received their application about encroachments. Since grazing land is maintained by gram panchayats, we have asked them to find out who all have encroached upon their land so that we can take action accordingly.”
